Cette sculpture s’inspire d’un instrument retrouvé avec les plaques en relief du musée et fabriqué pour les besoins de reproduction de ces plaques. Les bras de l’instrument, proches d’un compas pouvant s’articuler, permettent de prendre une distance entre deux points sur une carte
pour la reporter sur la plaque.
La sculpture démesurément agrandie dépasse l’échelle de la main pour tenter de prendre la mesure du relief d’un paysage. Instrument utopiste proche d’un outil d’arpentage dont le rêve est d’embrasser le paysage, une topographie à lire en creux.

This sculpture was inspired by an instrument found along with the Museum’s raised-relief map and manufactured in order to reproduce them. The instrument’s arms are hinged, like a pair of compasses, and enable the user to take a distance between two points on a plan in order to transfer it to the raised-relief maps. The disproportionately enlarged sculpture is well beyond human scale when it comes to measuring a landscape’s relief. A utopian instrument, like a surveying tool that dreams of encompassing the landscape, a topography to be read in intaglio.
