Installation: pump, piping, electric motors and water, Speakers and amplifiers

Charlotte Charbonnel closes this itinerary with a renewal of her opening gesture: inviting exterior energies into the interior of the abbey. This time she uses an underground canal as a source of water that flows into the room and out again, in a process of evacuation visible through a large slab of glass set in the floor under visitors’ feet. The water is brought up by a pumping system and a network of pipes in what resembles an archaeological operation, with the continuous sound of flowing water modulated and dispersed by a system of speakers and amplifiers. The installation gives the impression of fluctuations in the density and speed of the flow, in a seeming alternation of slowdowns and abrupt accelerations. In this room plunged into total darkness, sight definitely comes in second to hearing: attentive listening opens up the entire body to a sensation of diffuse encirclement, energised by the differences in intensity of the sounds produced. This sense of envelopment creates the effect of being plunged without warning into surroundings transformed in to a resonance chamber for an inner music coming straight from the belly of the Earth. In this return to the source the installation closes the loop of a project part scientific experiment and part esoteric ritual, in which is exposed the uncertain materiality of these invisible energies.
